Cabinet for Radiochemistry

Cabinet for radiochemistry

Department of Chemistry

The cabinet for radiochemistry currently has three employees. It is equipped with a gamma spectrometer that is used for the teaching (making diploma, master’s and doctoral theses) and scientific-research process. In less than 9 years, the Cabinet has successfully facilitated the creation of more than 40 diploma and master’s theses in the field of radiochemistry. In front of BiH, the Cabinet is an active member of two IAEA projects, which enable the Cabinet staff to receive training in the field of radiochemistry, as well as the procurement of equipment and reagents. These projects are important for PMF, Department of Chemistry, since they enable the participants to transfer the acquired knowledge to the students and thereby improve the teaching-scientific process. International cooperation with many other Universities and Institutes from the region and the EU was also achieved in front of the Cabinet.

The Cabinet is also an active participant in scientific and popular events organized by the Federal Ministry of Science and Education for 5 years in a row and every year involves more students as participants in the event. The realization of the project is achieved through the public presentation of scientific/professional work in the field of radiochemistry, and students are provided with a visit to one of the two universities listed. Also, within the scope of these scientific and popular manifestations, the cooperation of the University of Sarajevo with the Universities of Tuzla and Mostar is realized and future cooperation within the scope of scientific and research projects is promoted.

The research carried out by the Cabinet for Radiochemistry mainly includes tests of radioactivity in environmental samples, and research related to the purification of waste water loaded with radionuclides. From the list of works of Cabinet members, it can be seen that in the last few years most of the works have been published in world reference journals. Employees of the Cabinet for Radiochemistry within the Cabinet for Chemical Technology (field of biotechnology) are also actively engaged in research in the field of green technologies (production and purification of biodiesel), which resulted in the publication of a significant number of scientific papers in reference journals.

It is important to note that the Faculty of Science of the University of Sarajevo is the only higher education institution in Bosnia and Herzegovina where radiochemistry is studied within the Department of Chemistry.

Given that, in addition to the Radiochemistry Cabinet, the Department of Radiobiology with Radiation Hygiene, Biophysics and Environmental Protection of the Veterinary Faculty of the University of Sarajevo deals with research in the field of radioactivity, cooperation has been achieved with it through many joint researches in this area.
