Subdepartment of General and Inorganic Chemistry

Subdepartment of General and Inorganic Chemistry

Department of Chemistry

The Department of General and Inorganic Chemistry is one of the oldest departments at the University of Sarajevo. It was established in 1950, then as part of the Faculty of Philosophy. The first head of the Department, from 1950 to 1960, was Professor Dojčin Jakšić (1903 – 1960). After Professor Jakšić, the head of the Department was Prof. Ph.D. sc. Mira Glavaš (1932 – 2011), and then prof. Ph.D. sc. Vladimir Milićević (1933 – 2006). Since 2000, the Department has been managed by prof. Ph.D. sc. Emira Kahrović.

The Department included analytical chemistry until 1955 and chemistry teaching methodology until 2003. In addition to basic teaching, the teachers and assistants of the Department have for many years held lectures and exercises in General and Inorganic Chemistry for the Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Health Studies, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Academy of Fine Arts.

Teachers from the Department have so far achieved successful cooperation with reputable scientific institutions and scientists from the country and the world. The members of the Department are engaged in research in the field of complex compounds of transition metals, with an emphasis on the synthesis of new complex compounds of ruthenium and copper that have potential biological and biomimetic activity.

The chair is equipped with instruments for spectroscopic and electrochemical research. The instruments are intensively used for the preparation of final papers in all study cycles. The department is open to all service activities in the field of chemistry that its members are engaged in.

From the list of works by the members of the Department, it can be seen that most of the works were published in world reference journals in the field of (bio)inorganic chemistry and electrochemistry.
